Virtual Science Activity

Your job today is to analyze your favorite food.

You will discover if what you love to eat is actually healthy or not really. Carefully follow the instructions below to find out the number of calories and food groups in your favorite food. You need to clean a piece of paper and a pencil.

1. Log into : http://www.myfoodapedia.gov/
2. Type in the name of your favorite food in the text box. Be sure to spell it correctly and to be specific. Examples: lasagna.
3. Chick on the SEARCH button. A drop-down menu will appear for you to choose among similar foods. Chick on the food that is most similar to YOUR favorite food. Example: spinach lasagna vegetarian
4. Choose an Amount. These are only calculations. Choose an amount that is closer to what you usually eat.
5. Immediately, an information box (Mypyramid Food Groups and Calories) will provide you with all the nutritional facts of your favorite food.
6. Read and analyze the information.
7. On a blank sheet of paper copy ALL the nutritional information; the name of the food, the exact amount you chose, the total number of calories, all the food groups present in your favorite food and the extras too.
8. Bring the information to class tomorrow.

Keep in mind that we will have the Fist test on Nutrition Unit which includes:
-Food Guide Pyramid
-Food Groups- Examples/Number of Servings
-Video Questionnaire (Completed in class)
Today you were given two worksheets:
1)My Pyramid Worksheet in which you have to include all what you ate today.
2) The second in which you have to identify to which group does each of the things you ate belong.
Friday we will be preparing a picture of your favorite food and a brief essay ( 3 Paragraphs) about it. (To be done during class.
Paragraph 1- Introduction-Which is your favorite food and why.
Paragraph 2- Body- What food groups are part of your favorite food
Paragraph 3- Conclusion- Based on the activity you did during the virtual activity.

Week as of January 25th - January 29th

Last week we began our Nutrition Unit by going over the Food Guide Pyramid. We made an Interactive Writing Piece to summarize what we had discussed. Students wrote examples each of the food groups and the servings recommended. We also saw a video and students completed most of the questions. We will be reviewing the answers Tuesday and will be graded as homework.
All the above will be included in our Test Thursday, January 28th.
Tuesday students will be given a format "My Pyramid Worksheet" which they will need to complete Wednesday during class(Graded).
As a review for the test we will be watching another video.
We will be discussing the following:
  • Make half your grains whole
  • Vary your veggies
  • Focus on Fruits
  • Get your calcium-rich foods
  • Go lean with Proteins
  • Physical Activity
We will be making conversions using the Customary System understanding when each is used

It is really important that students learn this material, not only for a grade in a test, ut to learn to select healthy choices.

VIRTUAL SCHOOL ACTIVITY

Science 6th Grade

You are to complete this work and complete the questions.

1.- Google Nutrition and write in your notebook 3 interesting facts about Nutrition.

2.- Follow this link for an activity "Food Detective Activity". Read through it and write down the name of substances used in each study case.

Read through the article "Bone builders: Support Your Bones with Healthy Habits"

From this article write 5 test questions that you could have included in your Nutrition Quiz.


Make sure to do it in an organized way and according to your grade level.

As of today we will begin our Nutrition section by watching a video related with the Food Guide Pyramid. We will be discussing the advantages of a healthy diet and exercising.
Assignment: Students are to have in their notebook a Food Guide Pyramid that they may refer to.

Happy New Year 2010!!! My best wishes to you and your family!!
I want to remind you that your II Quarter is almost oven and that those of you who are scoring low still have a chance to improve your grade.
You will need to turn in by Tuesday, January 12 the last Activity Report for this period.
This as usual should include the cover page (includes school´s name, student´s name, activity, place/date, grade/section)
It has two parts:
one for Does the Soap Float? and another for Does Heated Soap Float?

We will be working graphing in a coordinate plane.
